Course schedule

Each week is based on a theme. There will be an introduction video as well as instructions on the assignment related to it. The assignments will be a mixture of photographing, looking/reflecting on images, and journaling. As the videos and assignments will be provided in a digital classroom, it can be done on the participants own time, and then discussed during the weekly/bi-weekly zoom calls.

Week 1 — foundation of visual elements

This first week will be an introduction on what therapeutic photography is, looking at photography as reflection rather than performance, and exploring visual elements in how we see.

Week 2 — mindfulness

In solitude you can find renewal, rebuilding and rediscovering parts of yourself you may have forgotten. This week we will look at how photography can encourage us to slow down, connect with ourselves, and observe more intentionally our surroundings, which in return, reflect things of ourselves.

Week 3 — emotions

We will explore how photography can support us in processing emotions through looking at images from the past. Not only will we be looking at the emotions and connections from within the images, but also discuss how the environments and spaces shown in old photographs can take us back to a memory or feeling.

Week 4 — self portraiture

We will look at how we can introduce self-portraiture as a reflective and empowering practice, to give space to ourselves and our feelings. Not only will we look at traditional self portraiture, but also photos of us taken by others and metaphorical self portraits (photographing a quality of ourselves in something we see).

continuation

After the participant has completed the four introduction videos and assignments, they can continue the process with customized 1-1 sessions with me. This allows them to have a foundation and understanding of the different ways photography can be used as a therapeutic tool, while giving them the opportunity to dive deeper into an area or topic that resonated the most with them.
