Chairs

of Corona

-2020-

Every morning and every evening, I walked the path outside my sister's apartment in Vancouver. With time, I became more and more aware of the behaviour of the chairs that inhabited the greenway along the concrete path.

There was no designated owner to them, they just sat there, patiently waiting and inviting you to take a moment.

Many of them were different, some wooden, some plastic, some in good shape, and others were nearing their end of their life span as a feasible chair.

However, what really caught my attention was the movement of them everyday. They tell the stories of the people that cross them, sharing without speaking.

The chairs took different directions, groupings, separations, and placements. Some would say, the sitter wanted to be pointing in the last beams of light during the evening before, others would say, they didn’t mind being in big groups, while on the contrary, new sitters the next day would separate them, perfectly distancing each chair from one another.

These chairs that inhabited the greenway path in Vancouver said a lot about people and the different behaviours, needs, and purposes they had in that moment. Whether alone or with others, chairs give us a moment to slow down and be, and share ourselves, our thoughts, or time amongst our friends without a destination.
